December - Yule - Winter Solstice December is the twelfth month of the year, its name derived from the Latin word decem, meaning "ten", as it was the tenth month of the Roman calendar. Its astrological sign is Sagitarius, the archer (nov 22-Dec 21), a mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter. This month is buried under blankets of snow.In the evenings, holiday lights twinkle for the Yule season. Back porches are stacked with firewood.Oven bake confections for serving around a decorated table. Sweets have a particularly ancient history at this time; they are made and eaten to ensure that one has "sweetness" in the coming year. The full moon of December is the Oak Moon. Its a time when the waxing moon overcomes the waning Sun, and days begin to grow longer again. In some Pagan traditions, this struggle is symbolicized by the Oak King; rebirth triumphing over death. Its no coincidence that Christians chose this month to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Winter Solstice is a solar festival and is celelbrated with fire in the form of the Yule Log. New Year's Eve is another important celebration during December. the old dying year is symbolized at this time by an old man with a long white beard carrying a scythe. The new year is seen appropriately as a newborn child. - From "Witches' Spell-a-Day Almanac. |

Yule - Fire Ash Spell - To insure Prosperity in the coming year Background The tradition of the Yule log dates back to pagan times in northern Europe and it s believed to be associated with the nature-based religions that existed for millennia before the coming of christianityl. Our ancestors held that all things contained the life force and that trees, in particular, were the adobe of spiritpeople, gods, and goddesses. Certain trees, therefore, were regardedas especially sacred, and it felled to built aspecial fire - at Yule for exemple - the ash was thought to be particulaly powerful. We know that the tradition of the Yulelog originally came from Scandinavia, as did the naming of the midwinter season and Yul (meaning "wheel"), wich took place in hte early eleventh century c.e. That the winter soltice was already a well-stablished part ofthe ritual year in the prehistoric Britain and Ireland is evident from theallignment of many prehistoric monuments, invaders from Denmark simply overlaid this tradition withsome of their own. The Yule log carried and especiallypotent magic if it was of Oak, reflecting the power invested in this tree, but its clear that over woods were used, too. |
